Raphael Healthcare Proves its Fitness

Raphael Healthcare has received the seal of approval from East Midlands procurement Hub as it was awarded "Approved Provider" status for low secure services within the area.

The 'Approved Provider' scheme was created as part of its plans to improve care for people with mental health and learning difficulties, as part of a bid to drive up standards while saving money for the NHS.

The project was launched in July last year, when it was announced that there would be a formal procurement contest aimed at establishing approved providers for low secure services.  Raphael Healthcare was able to prove that it meets East Midlands stringent services specifications, quality standards and cost criteria.

Paula Holdsworth, Director of Operations for Raphael Healthcare commented; "We had already set ourselves very high standards of achievement in all the criteria areas, and so we welcomed the opportunity to undergo the "Fitness for Purpose" review. To be awarded with the "Approved Provider" status is a clear indicator of the successes to date we are achieving with particular regard to clinical care and cost effectiveness of the services we provide, not only for women from the East Midlands region but on a national basis as well.  All staff members are to be congratulated on this achievement as without the consistent team approach we have adopted we would not have the successes over the past 18 months that we have had".

Christian Walker, Purchasing Manager at the NHS re:source collaborative procurment hub said:  "By working with commissioners within the East Midlands region we have challenged the Low Secure market to ensure we have the most appropriate quality services and value for money for our customers and ultimately for the people who use the services.

Although we came to the market in July 2007 work began 6 months prior to this.  The procurement process has been very comprehensive and challenging for both independent providers & NHS Mental Health Trusts alike, taking twelve months to complete. The project has been focused on the pathway, outcome and total cost of care of service users, this allowed us, working in conjunction with providers, to ensure we have solid foundations to further develop strategic relationships as part of the new contract with the "Approved Providers".

Raphael Healthcare's first hospital is The Farndon Unit in Newark, which opened for admissions in June 2006, and has proved to be a very successful low secure service for women.  The unit works effectively with major stakeholders and commissioners of services in an attempt to tailor and design services to suit local needs and demands as well as working closely with other NHS and Voluntary sector providers.
