Green Efforts Awarded
Patients at Raphael Healthcare's The Farndon Unit have been recognised for making a significant contribution to the conservation of the local area.
Under the guidance of experts from the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) the women have spent eight months involved in a number of horticultural and gardening projects at three popular venues in the region; Sconce and Devon Park, Newark Castle and Kelham Hall.
Impressed with the women's efforts representatives from Newark and Sherwood Council visited the unit to present them with certificates acknowledging the valuable contribution they have made.
Peter Dixon of the BTCV worked with the women throughout the scheme and commented; "The main benefit of the project was to allow the women to make a difference to these popular public areas and they were able to instantly see the positive results they had made. They were happy to get involved in all tasks including painting benches in children's play areas, cleaning up areas around the castle and even sweeping public areas for people to enjoy."
One of the patients involved in the conservation work was delighted with the reception they received from the community throughout and said; "Sometimes there can be a negative stigma associated with mental illness, but I believe this project has proved to many people that being ill does not preclude us from making a positive contribution to the environment we live in and that we are very happy to be involved."
Paula Holdsworth, Raphael Healthcare's Director of Operation commented; "It is very important for the women to have a sense of purpose and the work they did throughout the projects really helped to build their self esteem and confidence. They all enjoyed every aspect of the work and were delighted with the results."
