March 2010: Raphael Healthcare responds to the “rise in self harm amongst young people” report to the BBC

The number of young people admitted to hospital after cutting themselves deliberately is up by more than 50% in five years, according to figures published by the University of Stirling. There were 2,727 admissions in the UK for self-harm with a sharp object among under-25s in 2008/09, compared with 1,758 in 2004/05.

Chief executive of Raphael Healthcare, Arthur Robinson gave his views on some of the potential causes to the BBC; “The stresses of society to fit in with friends, fashion and the impact of being rejected, combined with the development of digital media and social networking sites have provided more avenues for bullies. With a number of reports of cyber bullying online this is a clear indication of one of the many factors behind the increase.”

Some of the key facts highlighted in the report included:
The rise in hospital admissions shows rates of self-harm are going up
The most common form is cutting, followed by overdosing, burning and strangulation
Anonymous surveys show one in 10 young people have tried to hurt themselves at some point
Most common reasons are family difficulties followed by body image and work or school pressure
Most young people who self-harm say they do it to cope with their emotions, not as a plea for help or a failed suicide attempt
