Charitable giving Boosts mental health

The patients at Raphael Healthcare are testing research published in the Science Journal stating that donating money to charity activates regions of the brain associated with pleasure and happiness. Researchers, using MRI, discovered females who donated money to charity increased activity in brain areas called the nucleus accumbens and the caudate nucleus. These areas have previously been associated with the brain's response to rewarding stimuli, such as viewing pictures of loved ones.

A number of Raphael Healthcare’s patients have since formed a pampering group called ‘Boost’ with the aim of making each other feel good about themselves and increasing their self-confidence. The ladies involved use their own money to buy all the beauty products and offer pampering sessions free of charge to other patients at the hospital.  They also run pampering sessions during charity events and donate any proceeds to their chosen charity.

Lead Psychologist at Raphael Healthcare’s The Farndon Unit, Phil Coombes, said: “We are really proud of the group of women who have made Boost happen.  The ladies who organise it benefit as it gives them something positive to be involved with and also beauty treatments can also make people feel good within themselves, increasing confidence – all while raising money for charity.”

“Boost not only brings women suffering from mental health illnesses together to work positively as a team, it also provides essential group support and interaction that help prepare them for community living.”
